Matisse on Mondays art project
We have been exploring Henri Matisse's collage artworks!
We began by reading stories about Matisse, finding out that he had loved painting since he was a child, but, after becoming ill as an old man, changing his technique to using paper and scissors.
We looked at lots of Matisse's pictures, talking about our likes and dislikes and thinking about the skills Matisse had used to make his art.
We focused on a picture called 'the snail' and talked about whether or not we thought it looked like a snail! We made our own simple collages and gave them titles, just like Matisse.
In our second week we found out that Matisse had assistants who made coloured paper for him by painting. We experimented with mixing our own colours, then painted our own paper.
We cut out curvy shapes to re-create our own class version of Matisse's picture 'The Sheaf'
We carried on our project by looking at self-portraits and thinking about which features the artists had chosen to include or leave out of their portraits. We took photos of ourselves to really look at our own features, then embellished them using felt pens to create some very unique artworks!

Chinese New Year
If you go down to the woods today ...
We spent some time in the nature area, fishing in the pond and telling stories from the storyteller's chair. Some children thought there might be a troll in the pond! Lots of children picked up sticks and made pretend campfires. Stanley said that was what (Native American) Indians did. Some children pretended to toast marshmallows on the fire. Lois took a picture of the bare branches against the sky.
What is snow made of?
We investigated 'What is snow made of?' by collecting some snow and bringing it inside. The children said it was made of ice, so the next question was 'What is ice made of?' We discovered that ice is made of water. When it is cold, the water freezes into ice. When it gets warmer, the ice melts and is water again.
We read the story 'Jack Frost' and talked about how the author had used colour to show that it was cold. We made our own frosty pictures, finding out how to use pastels at the same time (they smudge!)
A Christmas Recipe - what a wonderful performance!
We made ice ornaments to find out about freezing and melting
